Empowering students through the art of spelling and vocabulary, the North Dakota Spelling Bee Program is dedicated to fostering academic excellence, enhancing literacy skills, and nurturing a love for learning. We strive to create a supportive and challenging environment where young minds can showcase their talents, build confidence, and celebrate their achievements, all while encouraging a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and personal growth.
Our program features three competitive levels: school, county, and state. Students start by competing within their schools, then advance to county contests with the top spellers from across the state competing at the State Spelling Bee in Bismarck.

First, schools need to enroll at both the state and national levels. Upon enrollment, schools will receive access to materials and resources to run a school-level spelling bee. Students can then advance to the county spelling bee competition with the top two county winners each advancing to the North Dakota State Spelling Bee in Bismarck. The champion of the State Spelling Bee will earn an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.
In order to enroll, your school will need to complete the online registration forms and submit payment at both the State (NDACS) and National (Scripps) levels.
It is open to students who have neither turned 16 nor passed beyond the 8th grade. Scripps has no minimum age/grade. However, it is recommended that you visit with your county coordinator to determine which grades are eligible to compete at the county spelling bee.
The North Dakota Spelling Bee program is open to students in public schools, private schools, homeschools, and school district-based homeschool associations.
Absolutely! Homeschool families can enroll at reduced rates. At the state level (NDACS), the fee is $8.50 per homeschool student (with a maximum of $85). At the national level (Scripps), the fee is $135.

Yes! Upon enrolling nationally with Scripps, you will receive access to several resources, including 2025 Words of the Champions, the official study guide of the State Spelling Bee.
We recommend reaching out to your county coordinator to answer this question as each county can choose based on the number of schools enrolled, volunteers, event space, etc.
Each county can send two representatives to the State Spelling Bee. If all 53 counties participate, that is a total of 106 exceptional spellers!

The 2025 North Dakota State Spelling Bee will be held on Monday, March 17th at the Bismarck Event Center in Bismarck, North Dakota.
